Memorial Day Friendship Soccer Tournament

John Ho, our Kin On Soccer Tournament Director, is organizing a friendship soccer tournament to be held on Memorial Day 5/31 at Microsoft soccer fields from 9am to 2:30pm. This event is not related to the Kin On Soccer Tournament to be held on 7/31 and 8/1. However, some teams from last year’s Kin On Soccer Tournament are also participating in this Memorial Day Friendship Soccer Tournament.

You are welcome to drop by to see the players in action. Our photographers will be there also for this event. Pictures and links will be posted here after the matches.

Since our tournament date on June 27 is getting closer, I would like to gather all our players for playing our warm-up match (or just practice).

WHEN: June 19th, Saturday.

TIME: From 1.30 pm - 6.00 pm.

PLACE: Parlor Billiard Room at Lincoln Plaza.

COST: Players have to share for their own table rental ($10.00/hour)

Dear friends & family:

We had a very successful sports tournament last year. There were 3 events: Soccer, Badminton, and Table Tennis. Each sport had 120, 80, and 36 players respectively.

Soccer had the most player sponsorship of $14,586, with average sponsorship per player of $122.

The net proceeds from the 2008 sports tournament exceeded $22,000, directly benefitting Kin On. We couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you for supporting Kin On and the Asian community.

Last year, an old friend from junior high school asked me to take pictures of his soccer team. I found out then they were going to play in the 2008 Kin On fundraising soccer tournament. I also learned there were little individual sponsorships. It was mainly from the entry fees and a few business sponsors, which wouldn’t leave much for Kin On after the expenses of field rentals, referees, etc. With only 2 weeks until the tournament, I decided to help by soliciting my friends and family, setting up posting of pledges and used Flickr photo sites to generate interests to the soccer tournament players.

Due to the success of last year, I was “volunteered” to build a website to promote this year’s tournament events. Three more events are added for this year: Basketball, Tennis, and 8-ball Billiards.

The Kin On Sports Tournament committee set a goal of $40,000 for this year with the added events. (Tennis has since been cancelled due to insufficient entries.) Due to budget cut from the state government as well as underperformance with their trust fund due to the economy, the organization needs more donation than ever in order not to reduce services to the residents there. Please help us meet our goal.

John's Letter To Soccer Participants & Fans

Dear Soccer Participants/Fans,

We had a very successful tournament last year. The players poured their hearts out, played a very tight schedule and under the extremes of weathers (first day was hot and humid in the high 80’s, and the second day was in the 60’s and with a great downpour), to demonstrate their love of the game!

The reason I choose to volunteer for Kin On is that I have a lot of friends whose parents have gotten great services from the organization -- Long Term Care, Home Care, Hospice and many others. A good testimony is actually featured in the latest issue of the Kin On Report -- it is about my good friend of 30+ years, Francis Tong, and his dad. I can tell you that many who are volunteering for Kin On are doing it for the same reason as I do.

This year, the tournament will be held on July 18th and 19th at Shoreline Park. The purpose of the tournament is to do fund raising for the organization and to increase awareness of the facility in the local community while promoting health related activities. I hope you all will enjoy playing/watching the tournament. Let’s all work together and have another successful event this year, both on the field and off the field!

Concession Stand Opens Saturday July 11 At The Table Tennis Tournament

The Kin On fundraising concession stand will be open on Saturday July 11 from 11am to 4pm at the table tennis tournament.

One item on the menu is hom bow. Tea Garden Restaurant has donated a hundred of them for this event. The suggested donation is only $1.

FC Lang Soccer Club History

FC Lang Soccer Club is one of the original adult teams formed to give soccer dads and youth coaches a chance to play on their own. De-En Lang, an avid soccer player and youth coach, organized the team in the early 70’s and they began playing in the over-20 Division of the Washington State Soccer Association and created one of the first over-30 teams in 1974. The team has essentially stayed together ever since under De-En’s leadership. It has gone on to field over-40, over-50, and over-55 teams, currently maintaining the over-50 and soon to be over-60 teams. The teams have also been known as Gang-Green, Goombahs, Ravenna Team Volvo, Lang Financial, The Adults and The Kids, and The Pacers. The club plays outdoors year-round in the Greater Seattle Soccer League, has also played several seasons of indoor soccer, and has participated in several tournaments, including the past two years in the Kin On Tournament. The club practices every Saturday morning at Magnuson Park. De-En introduced his players to Tai Chi as an excellent warm-up, which has invited some interesting, glances from passersby.

De-En has always insisted that his players be team oriented, friendly to each other, and enjoy the game. As such many players have been with the team for 20 to 30 years. At least 14 players are over 60 years of age and two are over 70! The club has annual picnics and Christmas parties giving the spouses and kids, as well as retired players, a chance to “see them with their clothes on” and of course to have fun. Recently, De-En has organized two trips to China for the benefit of his team members, spouses and friends. FC Lang has developed innumerable friendships, a profound sense of camaraderie, and had a great time playing soccer for over 35 years.

The "Most Experienced" Player Returns To Play In Soccer Tourney

The "Most Experienced" player from last year, Alex Fefer MD, professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, will again play for team FC Lang in the 2009 Kin On Soccer Tournament.

From the 2008 tournament, he was seen shaking hands with Debbie of the Old Timers team.

Kin On Table Tennis Tournament Update

Doubles: We now have 18 teams. Because of the number of teams playing, we will now have a Lower and Upper Division play. All double matches will be Single Elimination. All teams with combined rating of under 2200 will be playing in the lower division. Teams with ratings of 2200 and higher will be playing in the Upper Division.

Singles: We now have 48 players, assuming no last minute drop out. Players with rating 1300 and over will be in the Advanced Level. Players with ratings 1001 -1299 will be in the Intermediate level and players will rating under 1000 will be playing in the Challenge Level. All Single preliminary matches are Round Robin. Other rounds will be Single Elimination.

All ratings used (USATT, club or self declared) are as of June 30, 2009.

Payment for Registration: $35 (with one dinner ticket for July 19 dinner at Tea Palace). If you need additional dinner tickets, it will be $20 each. Please let me know how many additional dinner you need by July 7. Please send in your registration fee to: Fred Yee at P.O. Box 50033, Bellevue, WA 98015 or pay on July 11 when you check in. You will not be able to play, however, without making payment first.

Sponorship: Please consider securing pledges for your play. All donations will go towards benefiting Kin On.

HK United History

HK United is a recreational soccer team located in Puget Sound area, Washington, U.S.A. The team currently consists of players from Hong Kong and other areas in Asia.
The team strives for bringing an environment to enjoy the sport of soccer along with building great friendship.

HK United founded with a group of overseas students from Hong Kong playing in the University of Washington (UW) Intramural Activity (IMA) spring soccer tournament in 1993 and continued on to play for the same tournament in 1994. Throughout the late 1990s, players from HK United played in indoor tournaments in South Seattle. In 2001, a more organized team was placed together and changed its name to Hidden Dragon, participated in the Arena Sports Indoor Soccer League in Redmond. Hidden Dragon continued to play the same indoor league until 2006, when enough players were recruited, changed its name to HK 11 and participated in the Redmond League, which is regular 11 on 11, outdoor soccer league.

In 2007, a group of overseas Hong Kong students from Bellevue Community College (BCC) joined HK 11 and the team brought back the name HK United. In results of more younger players, for the spring season of the same year, HK United participated in two different leagues at the same time, the Redmond League and Starfire Indoor League as well as holding soccer practices during weekends.

In recent years, HK United participated in the Redmond League, Starfire Indoor League, Starfire Sports Premier Soccer League (SPSL) and Greater Seattle Soccer League (GSSL). HK United continues to play throughout the year and is currently in the GSSL summer league on Sundays and holds practices during a weekday night around Bellevue area.

A Brief History of the Seattle Chinese Soccer Club (SCSC)

In the early 70’s, a group of overseas students from Hong Kong and a group of young Chinese immigrants got together every weekend to play the game of soccer that they learned to love from a very young age. Even though they came from different background, but through the game of soccer and the fact that they got together every weekend, rain or shine, they became a real tightly knitted group. They participated in the Washington State Soccer League and played against teams all over the city. They also traveled to Vancouver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles to play in the Can-Am Chinese Soccer Tournament where teams representing New York and Toronto also participated. After about 10 years of playing together, players’ lives started to change. Some graduated from college and moved away to pursue their dream jobs. Some started they own business and did not have free time for soccer anymore. Some got married and started their own families. As team members dispersed and interests diverged, there were no longer enough players to keep the team going. The team quietly dissolved without much fanfare. Even though there were no more weekend get-togethers, many former players remained real good friends and kept in touch even to these days.

Then came the World Cup Soccer Tournament in 1994. A new group of Chinese soccer players, along with some of the players from the early 70’s, re-ignited their love for the game by the World Cup Soccer fever and started to play again on the weekends. Soon, through words of mouth, more people joined in. In around year 2000, players felt the urge to form a loosely structured soccer club. They had a club president and treasurer. Besides soccer games, they held annual summer picnic, Christmas party, Chinese New Year dinner get-together where players and their families were all invited. Occasionally, the club traveled to Vancouver to play a friendly game with the Chinese teams up there. They also hosted the Vancouver teams here in the Seattle area a few times.

In 2007, the players wanted for a more structured organization to manage the team’s affairs ranging from field rental to event planning. They officially named the team the Seattle Chinese Soccer Club (SCSC). In 2008, SCSC was approached by Kin On to organize and host the first Kin On Soccer Tournament as a fund raising activity for the health care facility. The club members wholeheartedly supported such a good cause without any hesitation. The tournament was held in August 2008 and it turned out to be a great success. The rest, so to speak, is history.
